How to Spot a Locksmith Scam

I started out working through the dispatch companies, so I know exactly how that side of this trade operates. Here’s what to watch for.

The warning signs

The price on the phone isn’t the price. You call, someone quotes you $29 or $49, and that number does not exist. It gets you to agree to a visit. The real price appears once your car is open or your key is half made, and by then you’re not in a position to argue. A real shop will tell you a number on the phone and stand behind it.

You’re not talking to the locksmith. Most of the numbers you find in a panic belong to a call center, often in another state. They take your details and sell the job to whoever accepts it first. Nobody there knows what your car needs, and nobody is accountable afterward. Ask directly: am I speaking to the person coming out, or to a dispatcher?

They won’t give a straight answer about the vehicle. Tell them the year, make and model. Someone who does this work will tell you what kind of key it takes and roughly what it costs. Someone reselling your job will say “the technician will assess on site” because they genuinely don’t know.

An unmarked car. This is the clearest signal. A locksmith who does this for a living has the business name on the vehicle and a van full of key blanks, because the right blank has to be on board. Someone arriving in a personal car with a bag is working for whoever paid most for your job today.

Cash only, or a price that jumps at the end. Both mean the same thing: no record, no comeback.

They go straight for the drill. On most cars and most houses, picking the lock open is the first move, not the last resort. If drilling is suggested immediately, that’s someone without the skill or the tools, and you’re buying a new lock on top of the call.

What to do instead

Spend two minutes before you need anyone. Find a local locksmith, check they have a real address or a real service area and reviews with actual detail in them, and save the number in your phone. The worst time to pick one is standing in a parking lot at night.

When you do call, ask three things: what’s the price for my year, make and model, is the person coming out your own technician, and will the van be marked.

We answer our own phone, our technicians are ours, the vans say 844 Ohio Key, and the price you’re told is the price you pay. 844-644-6539.
